Download elementary OS

Users will need to download elementary OS, then copy the downloaded ISO file to a USB flash drive according to the instructions below.

System requirements recommended

  • Intel i3 or 64 bit Dual Core processor equivalent
  • 1 GB of system memory (RAM)
  • 15 GB of storage space on the drive
  • Internet connection

Users should back up important data to an online storage service or external hard drive. Installing a new operating system may overwrite existing data.

Create an installation drive

Users need a USB flash drive with at least 2 GB of free storage space and a software called Rufus.

  1. Open Rufus
  2. Insert a USB drive and select it in the Device list
  3. Select ISO Image right next to Create a bootable disk using .
  4. Click the disc icon and select the recently downloaded ISO
  5. Click Start and wait for the process to complete

Boot from the installation drive

To begin the installation process, the user must boot the computer from the installation drive

  • If the computer is still on, users need to plug in the installation drive and restart the computer
  • Most computers allow users to change the boot order by pressing F12 , Esc or another function key
  • Press F12 or an appropriate key and select the installation drive is usually USB-HDD or a line with the word USB . If you select the wrong drive, the computer will boot normally. Users need to restart the computer and select a different drive in that menu
  • Immediately after selecting the correct boot drive, the user will see the elementary OS screen. Now the user can follow the instructions on the screen to perform the remaining steps

  4. Click the Flash button !
