Instructions to install Linux on USB with UNetbootin

To install Ubuntu on a USB drive you have 3 flexible options:

  • Select the distribution you want and choose the version for it to leave. Let UNetbootin download the necessary packages.
  • If you already have an iso image on your hard disk, you should choose the second installation option (Diskimage) and then navigate to that iso file.
  • The third option requires more professional skills. Use Linux's kernel and Ram Disk (Initrd).

The easiest way in the opinion of the author is to choose a distributor (Mirror) that has a fast download speed to get the iso and follow the second option.

Prepare a drive of about 1 GB in FAT32 format. Plug this drive in, UNetbootin will automatically recognize it for installation. However you should be careful if you have more than one device plugged into the computer.

Click OK and wait a few minutes for the extraction process and installation to finish. Please reboot the computer and reset the boot BIOS from the USB drive and test your performance.
