Maxime Chattam was born in 1976 in Herblay, Val-d'Oise. As a child, he traveled to the United States often and frequently stayed in New York, Denver or Portland - where he set the background for the novel Soul of Evil.

At the age of 23, after writing two works without sending them to any publisher, Maxime enrolled in a criminology course at Saint-Denis.

His first horror novel, The Fifth Dynasty, was published under Maxime Williams in 2003 and won the Fictional Novel at the Gérardmer Festival. Maxime Chattam now devotes all his time to writing, especially specializing in horror detective genre.
