OBS Studio

OBS Studio 24.0.3 (formerly OBS Multiplatform) is a software for recording and streaming video directly and effectively. This is a completely rewritten version of Open Broadcaster Software (OBS Classic), with the main goal of supporting multiple systems, equipped with thorough feature sets and a much more powerful API. Currently OBS Studio is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux.

The main purpose of rewriting OBS video stream software

• Make it possible to run on multiple platforms, using multi-platform libraries, functions, and layers in devices that enable it. Cross-platform support is one of the main reasons OBS is rewritten. This also means that the UI toolkit will be needed for the user interface. It also allows the use of OpenGL and Direct3D.

• Disable hardware acceleration decoding on media sources instead of the default as before. Some users use an absurd amount of media, and enabling hardware acceleration decoding for each of them causes software stability issues.

OBS Studio 24.0.1

• By default, browser sources now have audio operations in previous versions 24.0 to use OBS to control that source audio. Users must now use the "Control Audio via OBS" option in the browser source property. This change was made to increase security because it has changed the configuration so that the browser sound does not confuse the user.

  • Additional features pause the record and can only be used when sharing the encoder at broadcast.
  • Added option to automatically adjust bitrate when advanced settings are overloaded. This is an alternative frame reduction option (available in advanced settings). Note, this task only works with RTMP. Severe overload may increase display latency to viewers.
  • Added feature to select multiple sources on the preview by selecting the box.

Error correction / Tweaking

• Revert changed OBS Studio 23.0 version into slideshow, instead limiting memory to 250 megabytes for photo slideshow. As a result, users do not worry about accidentally overflowing memory when downloading multiple photos from a certain folder. This action also fixes large image count errors that increase CPU usage and delay when rendering images or transitions in some cases.
• Remove the close button from the basic dock (scene, source, transition, mixer, control). These docks can still be hidden, now hidden by default in the view menu. This change does not apply to secondary dock such as chat, stream information and statistics.
• Fixed an issue where upmixing from mono to stereo would make the volume smaller.

Service integration

• Add optional feature of connecting Twitch or Mixer accounts in OBS. When connecting to an account, users do not need to enter a stream key and access special features related to the service, such as conversation panel or statistics / configuration panel.
• Twitch integration: Add Twitch conversation panel (with BTTV / FFZ support), 'Stream Information' control panel Twitch allows users to change the title / game stream . in OBS and Twitch's 'Stream Stats' panel is displayed statistics such as counting viewers (by default hiding Stream Stats, users can unhide it in the menu View => Docks submenu.
• Integrated audio mixer: Add Mixer dialog.
• Control panels such as chat boards used for services will display as a dock bar. Users can dock / remove the window dock to customize their position setting when using OBS.
• YouTube, Facebook and many other services are still active.

Improved NVENC and coding

• Additional implementation of new NVENC, to improve performance, reduce impact on systems and resources. To enable it, go to Settings, Output tab and in Encoder, select Hardware (NVENC) New. Note that this new deployment is not available on Windows 7 due to operating system restrictions; Older implementations will be used instead in this case.
• Additional features to deploy new NVENC:
  • Visual adjustment: Turn on optimized encoding settings that use bitrate to increase perceived image quality, especially in high-motion situations with increased GPU usage. This action increases the image quality. Qualitative measurements like the PSNR may score lower but the video will show more clearly.
  • Front: Activate frames B. If turned off, encryption will always use the number of frames B selected in the 'Max B-frames' setting. If this feature is turned on, it will increase the image quality, however, using more B-frames is needed, up to maximum and increase GPU usage.

• Add audio filters Limiter and Expander.
• Add support for batch signal mixing to the Remux Recordings dialog box.
• Added the option to automatically merge the recordings of the logs to MP4 in the Advanced settings.
• Add a Decklink export tool to the tools menu. This allows you to export OBS to a Decklink device.

Scripting

• Add Luajit / Python3 script support. Scripts can be connected via 'Tools' menu -> "Scripts"
• Lua is supported via Luajit, integrated in this program. Lua is recommended for scripts, automation and resources
• Python is available if access to its respective library. On Windows, to use Python, Python version 3.6 must be installed separately (x86 or 64 version if using OBS Studio 64-bit, x86 version if using OBS Studio 32-bit). And the path to install Python 3.6 must be configured in the Python Settings tab

• Adding a Lua script example: The "Analog Clock" source displays an analog clock (added like any other source when the script activates; a "Countdown Timer 'script puts the text source content into a countdown timer ; an 'Instant Replay' script automatically saves playback if there's a replay buffer enabled, then replays it in certain media sources after saving replay
• Add Python script example: A 'URL Text' script places certain text source content on the downloaded text from the specified URL for each specified time period.

New audio feature

• Add sidechain / ducking support on the compression filter. It allows this feature to lower the audio level of an audio source based on the size of the other source. For example, to apply an audio dub command to a desktop audio source, add a compression filter to the computer audio source, then select the audio microphone source in the "Sidechain / Ducking Source" attribute.
• Supports ambient audio output, allowing audio output 2.1, 4.0, 4.1, 5.1 and 7.1 to stream or record
• Add a new audio meter to allow this feature to see the audio level of each audio channel of that source, promptly detect any errors related to each specific audio channel.
• Optimize the audio meter so that users can easily know the audio is cut and adjust the level of accuracy
• Add the "Audio Meter Decay Rate" option in Setting to select certain delay rate (fast, medium, slow) for the desired meter measure
• Rename audio sources with one click in the audio mix, including desktop audio source and audio microphone added via audio settings
• New Production and Studio Mode features
• Add a 'Multiview' slide show (accessible via the View menu), allowing users to preview the show, up to 8 scenes at a time. Click Scenes in Multivew to change the scene. You can blacklist certain scenes from the screen in multi-view by right-clicking on a scene in the list and unchecking the "Show in Multiview" button. You can also change the Multiview layout style in the regular settings
• Adding an option in the Settings allows users to switch scenes in Studio mode simply by double clicking on it. This feature also applies to multi-screen slideshows
• Add separate slideshows for both previews and shows in studio mode
• Add horizontal or vertical layout option in studio mode in Settings
• Add transition overrides on each scene, allowing the user to choose

Although the original OBS helped a lot for users to record and stream live video, it still had some limitations and the introduction of OBS Studio helped overcome these problems. If you love the original version of OBS, you should try OBS Studio and feel the changes it brings.
