The Super Crate Box starts out with a very simple idea, with Vlambeer's description of "bringing back the glory days of the golden era". The gameplay takes place on a 2D map and the simple task is to collect as many wooden crates and kill as many opponents as possible. The game has a similar gameplay to Contra but does not take the scene but a static map, only the opponent moves.
