Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking service founded by David Karp and owned by Yahoo! Inc. This service allows users to post multimedia content on a short blog site, while also monitoring other users' blogs. Tumblr features are mostly done through the dashboard interface.

The birth and development of social network Tumblr

Tumblr's development began in 2006 in about two weeks between contracts at David Karp's software consulting firm David Karp. Karp has been interested in tumblelogs (short-form blogs) for a while and is waiting for someone to set up this blog platform to recommend the tumblelogging platform. After a year of waiting and still no one doing, Karp and developer Marco Arment started working on their tumblelogging platform. Tumblr was launched in February 2007, and within two weeks, it has attracted 75,000 users. By September 2010 Arment had left Tumble to focus on Instapaper.

Just two months after Tumblr announced it would target paid ads on its website, in early June 2012, Tumblr got its first major brand advertising campaign with Adidas. Adidas has launched an official football Tumblr blog and purchased placements on users' dashboard.

On May 20, 2013, Tumblr announced that it had struck a deal with Yahoo !, whereby Yahoo! will own Tumblr for $ 1.1 billion. Many Tumblr users are uncomfortable with the news, creating a petition with nearly 170,000 signatures. David Karp is still Tumble's CEO and the deal was finalized on June 20, 2013.

As of July 1, 2015, Tumblr has over 243.3 million blogs. The company's headquarters are in New York City.

Blog management:

• Dashboard (dashboard): This is the main tool for Tumblr users.It is a direct feed of recent posts from the blogs they follow.Through the dashboard, users can comment, post back to blogs (reblog), like the posts from other users' blogs that appear on their dashboard.Dashboard also allows users to upload text articles, images, videos, quotes or links to their blog with one click on the button displayed at the top of the dashboard.Users can connect their blog to Twitter, and Facebook, so whenever they create an article, it can also be posted as a tweet on Twitter and status on Facebook.
• Queue: Users can set a schedule to postpone created posts.They can spread their posts over several hours or even days.
• Tag: For each user-created article, they can help viewers find articles on certain topics by adding tags.If someone has uploaded a blog image and wants others to see, they can add the #picture tag, and viewers can use that word to search for articles with the #picture tag.
• Edit HTML: Tumblr allows users to edit HTML code on their blog's theme to control the look and feel of the blog site.Users can also use a custom domain name for their blog.

Mobile:

• In 2009, with the acquisition of Tumblerette, an Apple App Store app created by Jeff and Garrett Ross, Tumblr officially launched its service to the iPhone.
• By April 17, 2010, Tumblr was available on BlackBerry through the Mobelux app in BlackBerry World.
• In June 2012 Tumblr released a new version for Tumblr on iOS, version 3.0 that allowed support for Spotify, high-resolution images, offline access.
• Tumblr is also available on Android devices.
• On April 23, 2013, Tumblr released a version for Windows Phone.
• On May 16, 2013 Tumblr released a version for Google Glass.
