Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 makes it easy to install and run many programs running on Windows XP directly from a Windows 7 computer.

Windows XP Mode uses virtual technology like Windows Virtual PC to create a virtual Windows XP environment for Windows 7 computers. Specifically, Windows XP Mode will simulate a virtual Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (SP3) environment 32- bit. The downloaded file includes a virtual hard disk (.vhd file) with Windows XP SP3 preinstalled. Client emulation software such as Windows Virtual PC needs to be installed to use Windows XP Mode.

System requirements

  • Operating system: Windows 7, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, or Windows 7 Enterprise.
  • At least 2GB of free hard disk space to install Windows XP Mode.
  • Add 15GB free hard disk space for virtual Windows environment.

Note: you can use Windows Virtual PC to run Windows XP Mode on the computer. Windows Virtual PC requires a compatible hardware processor, with AMD-V, Intel VT or VIA VT turned on in the BIOS.
