UNetbootin for Linux - Install the operating system from the USB

There are many reasons why you want a Linux operating system to run on a USB drive . A "rescue disk" containing the full operating system or an "installation disc" helps you install it on your EeePC. But it seems that creating such a device is for professionals only. Now with UNetbootin, you have a tool that makes installing Linux onto your USB Flash drive even simpler!

Note: Most installations work fine but not all. If your installation USB drive does not work, try doing it with a different drive or with another operating system. But the first thing you should do is check to see if your computer is configured to boot from a USB drive.

The utility has both easy to use Windows and Linux versions. To install Ubuntu on a USB drive you have 3 flexible options:

Select the distribution you want and choose the version for it to leave. Let UNetbootin download the necessary packages.

If you already have an iso image on your hard disk, you should choose the second installation option (Diskimage) and then navigate to that iso file.

The third option slightly requires more professional skills. Use Linux's kernel and Ram Disk (Initrd).

The easiest way in the opinion of the author is to choose a distributor (Mirror) that has a fast download speed to download the iso and follow the second option.

Prepare a drive of about 1 GB in FAT32 format. Plug this drive in, UNetbootin will automatically recognize it for installation. However you should be careful if you have more than one device plugged into the computer.

Click OK and wait a few minutes for the extraction process and installation to finish. Please reboot the computer and reset the boot BIOS from the USB drive and test your performance.
