Windows PowerShell is a command line interpreter and scripting language that you can use to manage your organization.

Windows PowerShell uses an administrative task called cmdlets. Each cmdlet requires and has optional arguments, called parameters, which determine which object to apply or control how the cmdlet performs its task. You can combine cmdlets in the form of scripts to perform complex functions that allow you to gain more control and help you be more efficient.

You use Windows PowerShell on a local computer to connect to your web-based organization over the internet and perform non-available or practical management tasks in the control panel and Exchange.

For example, you can create dynamic distribution groups, create or update multiple user accounts at the same time, and script automated solutions.

Before you begin, make sure to follow these steps:

  • Install and Configure Windows PowerShell
  • Connect Windows PowerShell to the service

Windows PowerShell cmdlets are available in web applications over the internet.

Before you can use Windows PowerShell, make sure that you have installed and configured the correct version of Windows PowerShell and Windows Remote Management (WinRM) on your computer. You must use the Windows Management Framework that contains the correct version of Windows PowerShell v2 and WinRM 2.0.

If your computer is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you do not need to install any software. Windows Management Framework has been installed.

You can download and install the Windows Management Framework if your computer is running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or SP2
  • Windows Server 2008 SP1 or SP2
  • Windows Server 2003 SP2
  • Windows XP SP3

New features in Windows PowerShell 2.0 include:

Remote (remoting)

Windows PowerShell 2.0 allows you to run commands on one or more remote computers from a computer running Windows PowerShell. PowerShell Remoting allows multiple ways to connect, ways that include interactions (1: 1), fan-out (1: many), and fan-in (many: 1 using IIS caching).

Integrated scripting environment

PowerShell has an integrated scripting environment (ISE) that allows you to run interactive commands and edit and debug scripts in a graphical environment. Key features include pairing syntax, selective execution, graphical debugging, Unicode support and context-sensitive support.

The module

The module allows script developers and partition administrators and their organizations with Windows PowerShell code in a closed, reusable unit. Code from a module executes in that closed context and does not affect the outside of the module.
Advanced functionality

Advanced functional capabilities and behavior such as similar cmdlets. However, they are written entirely in the language of Windows PowerShell, instead of compiling C #.

The background work

Windows PowerShell 2.0 allows running a command or expression asynchronously and "in the background" without interacting with the console.

Horse

This feature supports Windows PowerShel tool infrastructure, transitions, management activities, and system events.
International scenario

This new feature allows Windows PowerShell scripts to display messages in spoken language specified by the user interface culture settings on the user's computer.

Debug script

A new debug feature has been added to Windows PowerShell, which allows you to set line breaks, columns, variables, and commands that allow you to determine the actions that occur when a breakpoint is reached.

New cmdlet

Windows PowerShell 2.0 introduces cmdlets built into more than 100 commands. The cmdlets do not include other tasks that allow you to manipulate computer-related events, and access performance management tasks.

System requirements:

Windows PowerShell supports operating systems: Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 x64 Edition, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista Service Pack 1, Windows Vista Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 3.
