SCIM is a multilingual keyboard, installed by default in versions of Ubuntu 9.04 and earlier. SCIM is a stable keyboard (though there are still some bugs) . Currently SCIM has stopped developing.
SCIM by itself cannot help us type Vietnamese (as well as other languages). Which handles Vietnamese through modules called IME. Currently there are 2 best IMEs for Vietnamese: scim-unikey and scim-m17n.

SCIM for Ubuntu
To install, simply double-click on the downloaded file and select Install Package . If required, you need to declare your account to log into the system you created earlier (the account when installing Ubuntu). When the installation process is complete, restart your computer for the percussion to take effect.
At this time, a new icon of SCIM appears on the taskbar at the top of the screen. To type Vietnamese, you need to open the application you want to input (such as components in OpenOffice.org). Then click on the SCIM icon, select the language Vietnamese and select the typing method according to your liking.
